Which perfumes do you get the best feedback for?

Ditch your Lattafas and Armafs guys, they smell like air fresheners. They smell cheap. Arab teenage gang vibes. Home chemistry smell. All that cheap clone shit is always the same. Yes it's 90% similar to the first notes of Aventus or whatever, but it's the last 10% where all the magic lies. If you can smell it, of course. I don't have a particularly good sense of smell and I can.

Loud, cheap, obnoxious, flat, chemical.

But I have good news for you.

If you're in US, Montagne Fragrances makes FANTASTIC dupes with natural ingredients. $40 for 50ml. I have a few and it's night/day difference vs Lattafas and Armafs. They also ship to EU but it's not really worth the money with VAT and shipping (unfortunately for me). Enjoy.

Think of fragrance as an accessoire. It's a expression of you as a person. You decide. In the same category as your watch, your tattoos, your shoes, your jewelry (if you have any). It's not quite the same category as clothing - it stands a little separate, it's the detail.

You don't ask what kind of tattoos the girls like, so you can get one just like that, right? Right? I hope not. If you want a tattoo, you just go and get it. You get the one that YOU like. And then you roll with it. It's a part of you.

So going for "compliment perfumes" or "fragrances that girls like" is ass backwards. It doesn't work. You have to like it. And own it, 100%. And that's something you don't get from YouTube top 10 lists.

It also depends on skin chemistry. So you just have to try out many, and smell your hand for a few hours before buying.

Here's my list, and the criteria that I built it up on.

I like to smell like a classy, well-put-together guy who has his shit together. Early 30's. Successful.

My preferences are:
  • Classy
  • Clean
  • Non-Teenager smelling
  • Non-Clubfag smelling
  • Versatile & wearable (not too sweet/heavy)
  • No Ambroxan bombs (sensitivity)
  • No Iso-E-Super bombs (sensitivity)
  • Good durability
  • Some X factor about it I like
My current faves are (and probably will stay this way):

- Amouage Reflection
- Chanel Allure Sport Extreme
- Chanel Allure Sport Blanche
- Chanel Platinum Egoiste (vintage 2014 or so, current one easier to wear though)
- Dior Homme Sport
- Acqua Di Gio EDT
- Acqua Di Gio Parfum
- Hermes Voyage Parfum
- Hermes Terre Eau Givree
- Hermes Terre Parfum (vintage, pre-2016, current one pathetic longevity)
- Hermes H24 EDP
- Guerlain L'homme Ideal Intense (vintage black bottle, current one OK but lasts less)
- Prada Amber Intense (discontinued, not everyone's cup of tea)
- Prada L'Homme
- Prada L'homme Intense
- TF Oud Wood
- TF Fougere D'Argent

Each one of these will have you smelling classy, not like a teenager/youngguy, and not like a clubfag. No locker room ambroxan teenage horny smell (Sauvage, YSL Y, etc.). But not grandpa "old man" smelling either. And not like the "cologne guy". All smack in the middle.

(Girls have always picked Prada L'homme out as their favorite from the bunch btw. Every single time. Allure extreme's had some good reactions too.)

There's many other good ones, but these ones for me are the top. Your list will be different. If you're even interested enough in the topic to create one.

And again, I'm in my 30's. Looking for some class.

If you're 21 or something, just go get whatever one you like the most and own the fuck out of it.

Recommendation for anyone new to this - just get Acqua Di Gio black bottle, it's good for all occasions including dates and parties. Works in the cold. Just not the super-high heat of the summer. And get whatever freshie you want for summer to complement it. You're done (for a while).

That's my office fragrance, not too extroverted, not too "sexy", which would be wrong in a professional context. Clean, like soap or powder. The perfect choice for work, but for dates and also for myself it is too late.

I underestimated the topic of scent for years. Clearly not a game changer, but combined with other things asy ou said like clothing, shoes, watch and so on, it is a relevant aspect of the personal appearance. And it can for sure influence perception.

You seem to be into the topic, do you change fragrances often or do you have your 2-3 scents that you always use, keyword siganture?

Edit: Just fucking lol haha, 5 minutes after I did the post above, a female colleague came to my office. As she walked out she asked "wow, you smell good, what perfume do you use". It was Prada L'Homme.

Noir Extreme is definitely a banger, I love the opening. I was torn between this and Le Male Le Parfum. There was a good offer for the latter so I took it.

I'll take a look at this Aesop body cleanser, very expensive holy shit. But you would say it's worth it? Not too much smell when you have that and a perfume?

Definitely worth it I think. Price wise as only 2 sprays are needed compared to 5-6 for other common brand it doesn’t work out as expensive as initially expected.

Also the effect it has on body scent is great, legit makes you smell amazing and Aesop shower gel actually combine very well with the Tom ford scents I mentioned. From Aesop Geranium Leaf and Coriander Seed are great. I havent tried Aesop EDP fragrances though which I think will be very good.

I love too many of them, and my preferences change depending on weather/mood/location/setting.

For example I'm in Budapest right now, and Dior Homme Sport is perfect for summer. But just not for summer here, the city is not dynamic enough. It just doesn't vibe with it. It really shines in places like Thailand/Vietnam/Brazil though, cutting through that thick humidity and heat, in a dynamic vibrant environment.

There's just too many that I like, so I imagine I'll always have 10-15 bottles or so of the ones that I truly love. And then rotating based on how I feel like. It's a bit like fashion though - you gotta make a few mistakes before you settle into what you like and what feels natural and "you". Fortunately most of them can be resold.

I kinda miss having that one bottle of Acqua Di Gio for all occasions though. Life was simpler. Still coming to terms with it, having most of them out of sight and only using a couple. And then changing around once a month or so. I wouldn't be able to live with 50 bottles on my cupboard like those YouTubers do lol.

I guess I'll see in a few years, when they start running out. Which ones I repurchase and which ones not. When the initial excitement is gone. I'm a minimalist at heart, but enjoy exploring and learning about these things.

I think I found the winner finally. I prefer to use same perfume for all occasions, whether its date or just going outside. And the winner surprised.

My last samples arrived, Tom Ford Noir Extreme and L'Eau L'Homme EDT Prada.

Tom Ford.. horrible! Smells like old man.

Prada...bingo! I feel fresh, masculine and young but mature with this scent. This is it!

Its this Prada or JPG Le Male. Probably Prada because JPG is not for all occasions. Have to think for couple days.

Newb question for you, do you deliberately go for neutral/unscented shower gel and deodorant to avoid having anything mess with your cologne? I’ve always just gone for the basic masculine, old spice type products out of convenience

Nah I think I read about it somewhere and it really doesn't matter, I just buy the cheapest stuff anyway for shower gels & all that. Old spice is nice!
