Original post:

Hey everyone,

I've just turned the forums back on. Tomorrow @MakingAComeback will make a proper post about this.

I just wanted to let everyone know that there may some hiccups and that everything may not work perfectly right off the bat.

Feel free to let me or the mod team know if anything is broken or if you're having trouble with something in the new software. I have tested mostly everything but I may have missed something.

Enjoy having a search function that actually works. :)

Known issues:
- Profile status avatar looks weird
- Attachments did not transfer over (issue with importer)
- Likes did not transfer over (Once again an importer issue)

Some helpful links:

Thanks. My profile pic/avatar seems to be gone, but it's not a big problem to make a new one.

Yes, we had an issue with the importer and some avatars were deleted. You can just reupload it.

Attachments also are broken, unfortunately. The importer does a good job but it's not 100% perfect.

Thanks for your efforts on this everyone!

I think this may still have some issues - I searched "Peru" for example in private area but missing lots of threads.

These results misses for example https://winnerwith.in/threads/spicy-boi-365-day-log-year-two-stats-and-thoughts.3861/

I think the reason why is it's only searching the first post in each thread - but what would be valuable would be to be able to search all posts, not just the first one in a thread.

Thanks!

General question and PSA for everyone who's not behind the wall:

Given the updated forum software, how searchable/indexable are their logs and profile avatars now?

The private section is not visible to guests or users who haven’t posted in the new members thread. So I don’t see how it would be indexable.

As far as profile avatars go those were always public, as Pancake mentioned

EDIT: You were right. I have disabled search engine indexing for the private forum now.

Yeah, totally possible. That comment was more tongue in cheek, I get that Xenforo's search isn't flawless either. Maybe there is a way to improve it though.

It seems strange that this search issue persists if we’ve changed forum software - do you know why?

The inability to search accurately means that this forum loses a lot of value - there’s a lot of gold posted previously but if no one can find it..!

Also - I didn’t get notification that you quoted me in your reply - it’s quite a useful feature so would be good to have if possible. Thanks

It's possible that the native xenforo search isn't that great either. I've done some research and there is an addon to improve it, I will look into implementing this.

Xenforo is far superior to phpBB in practically every aspect, which is why we switched to it.

If you find any threads that you think should be stickied or moved to the guides section, feel free to let me or one of the mods know.

With regards to notifications, that's strange. It works fine for me. Maybe you had it disabled in phpBB and the settings carried over?

Either way, you can enable them here: https://winnerwith.in/account/preferences

It would be helpful to have more datapoints of search not working. It's possible that's a one-off. It's also possible that imported content didn't get indexed that well compared to content created natively on Xenforo.

In any case, I'm reasonably confident that Xenforo's search is better than PhPBB's!

Yep these were my thoughts exactly. Understandably the importer is not perfect and perhaps the original content is not indexed as well. We can talk to support to see if there's a way to improve this.

I don't like the forum's new user interface. I understand that there are bugs to be fixed and that repairs will be made, but, overall, the forum looks to have taken a lot of steps back. Everything looks smooshed and cluttered. The small font is going to make reading long posts taxing. My eyes can't help up but just glaze over every post I see. Zooming in doesn't help. The previous forum looked clean and clear. Why get rid of it? This new one just looks like a vampiric version of GLL's forum. I'm not tech-savvy, so I can't pinpoint exact issues, but, intuitively, this new forum looks like a hassle to interact with.

Goal is to make it look as much as we can like the old forum, just running on new software. We'll look into the font and spacing.

I think that Xenforo (new software) tends to be a bit more cluttered, so we'll keep disabling as much as we can from their interface until we achieve zen.

edit: text spacing, size, and colors now match KYIL!

would there be a way to get the bbcode [mention] tag to parse as @ somehow?

This can be done, but it won't work completely because the @ isn't the whole picture, it's just the user trigger for it.

If you try it out, it actually inserts [/USER=971]@colgate / bulldog[/USER]", so we'd have to map each old text lookup to the actual Xenforo user ID for it to link correctly.

We'll probably just replace all the old mention tags with @ with a search and replace add-onaand they can stay as text-only.

I noticed that some threads I had bookmarked have URLs that no longer work/currently are broken.

For example, this: "https://killyourinnnerloser.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=75062#p75062"

Redirects to this: "https://winnerwith.in/viewtopic.php?p=75062#p75062"

Which has the "

Oops! We ran into some problems.

The requested page could not be found.
" message, and not the content that it used to have... which theoretically isn't the end of the world, but does make it annoying to try and search for what the posts' content was that I bookmarked.

Pinging ya for this one as it suggests, Squilliam!

Interesting, I tried hard to make sure any URLs would redirect perfectly to the new server. I'm guessing the new forum software has a slightly different URL format compared to phpbb?
EDIT: yeah, it does. Completely different. Squilliam and Pancake: if there's anything I can do on my end to tweak the redirect a bit, let me know (message me on Telegram; I might not see replies here)

Yeah, unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done about that. Xenforo uses its own post ID system and viewtopic.php is something that exists in only phpBB, so of course it's not going to work.

I am going to figure out how to improve the search function, because I agree that the way it is currently is definitely not cutting it.
